CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian witnesses and officials say villagers have beat to death a young man after catching him trying to steal a car in a new case of vigilante violence.
A number of recent lynchings or attempted lynchings have raised worries over an increasing breakdown of security, adding a new challenge to Egypt's government.
A security official says dozens of villagers in Ezbat el-Gindy in the northern Sharqiya province caught the man trying to steal a car at gunpoint Thursday.
Video footage shows the man, half-naked and bloody, being dragged by the foot while villagers beat him with sticks.
A witness says residents then tied him to a tree until he died.
The security official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.
