Mood Disorders: Help for Dealing with Depression and Anxiety

Hello there! Have you ever tried ? Supreme Panic Magic (erm, check it on google should be there)? Ive heard some? interesting things about it and my auntie after a lifetime of fighting eradicated the panic problem with it.

howcast is now? kinda like expertvillage

Wow. The stigma of mental illness still exists it seems. Doctors and therapists aren?t all evil, they are people. Some are bad, some are good and sometimes you don?t get on with? a doctor and therapist and you need to find another one.

my girlfriend has depression and went to a doctor . They labeled her crazy even though she is far from it . fuck you and your dumbass doctors with a bullshit degree? .

howcast not making a fucking video about going to a doctor for depression yep I?ve been suffering from trauma and depression for years I went to several therapists did nothing for me and here they? are saying go to a doctor.

Wow Howcast, you really? learned how to ruin a perfectly good Youtube channel :)

Not this fucker again.. Thought his videos was done by now? Also that old? bitch that keep on fucking talking about sexual disorders.. Fuck you HowFuck.

Chemists demonstrate nanoscale alloys so bright they could have potential medical applications

May 14, 2013 ? Alloys like bronze and steel have been transformational for centuries, yielding top-of-the-line machines necessary for industry. As scientists move toward nanotechnology, however, the focus has shifted toward creating alloys at the nanometer scale -- producing materials with properties unlike their predecessors.

Now, research at the University of Pittsburgh demonstrates that nanometer-scale alloys possess the ability to emit light so bright they could have potential applications in medicine. The findings have been published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

"We demonstrate alloys that are some of the brightest, near-infrared-light-emitting species known to date. They are 100 times brighter than what's being used now," said Jill Millstone, principal investigator of the study and assistant professor of chemistry in Pitt's Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. "Think about a particle that will not only help researchers detect cancer sooner but be used to treat the tumor, too."

In the paper, Millstone presents alloys with drastically different properties than before -- including near-infrared (NIR) light emission -- depending on their size, shape, and surface chemistry. NIR is an important region of the light spectrum and is integral to technology found in science and medical settings, said Millstone. She uses a laser pointer as an example.

"If you put your finger over a red laser [which is close to the NIR light region of the spectrum], you'll see the red light shine through. However, if you do the same with a green laser [light in the visible region of the spectrum], your finger will completely block it," said Millstone. "This example shows how the body can absorb visible light well but doesn't absorb red light as well. That means that using NIR emitters to visualize cells and, ultimately parts of the body, is promising for minimally invasive diagnostics."

In addition, Millstone's demonstration is unique in that she was able to show -- for the first time -- a continuously tunable composition for nanoparticle alloys; this means the ratio of materials can be altered based on need. In traditional metallurgical studies, materials such as steels can be highly tailored toward the application, say, for an airplane wing versus a cooking pot. However, alloys at the nanoscale follow different rules, says Millstone. Because the nanoparticles are so small, the components often don't stay together and instead quickly separate, like oil and vinegar. In her paper, Millstone describes using small organic molecules to "glue" an alloy in place, so that the two components stay mixed. This strategy led to the discovery of NIR luminescence and also paves the way for other types of nanoparticle alloys that are useful not only in imaging, but in applications like catalysis for the industrial-scale conversion of fossil fuels into fine chemicals.

Millstone says that taken together these observations provide a new platform to investigate the structural origins of small metal nanoparticles' photoluminescence and of alloy formation in general. She believes these studies should lead directly to applications in such areas of national need as health and energy.

Funding was provided by the University's Central Research Development Fund and administered by Pitt's Office of Research and University Research Council.

Prosecutors seek 6-year jail term for Berlusconi in sex trial

By Silvia Aloisi and Sara Rossi

MILAN (Reuters) - Italian prosecutors called on Monday for a six-year jail sentence and a lifetime ban on holding public office for centre-right leader and former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, who is charged with abuse of office and paying for sex with a minor.

The 76-year-old billionaire media tycoon and senator is accused of paying for sex with Karima El Mahroug, better known by her stage name "Ruby the Heartstealer", when she was under 18, during the now notorious "bunga bunga" parties at his villa at Arcore near Milan in 2010.

However, prosecutors considered by far the more serious charge was that he abused the powers of his office during a separate incident by arranging for her to be released from police custody where she was being held on theft charges.

They requested five years imprisonment for that and a year for paying for sex with a minor. The verdict is expected on June 24. But no final verdict will be enforced in either case until the appeals process, which can last for years, is exhausted.

Still, Berlusconi's legal difficulties have created growing tension within Prime Minister Enrico Letta's governing coalition, which includes the ex-premier's center-right party.

"At Arcore there was a system of organized prostitution aimed at the satisfaction of the sexual pleasure of Silvio Berlusconi," Milan chief prosecutor Ilda Boccassini said in a more than six-hour closing argument.

Boccassini said a small army of young women, many of them aspiring starlets, took part in the sex parties at Berlusconi's residence, hoping to make it big on one of his television channels. Those who stayed on after dinner were rewarded with cash, cars or free apartments, she said.

The prosecutor said mobile phone records showed that Ruby, a Moroccan runaway, had spent the night at Berlusconi's home on at least seven occasions between February and May 2010.

"There is no doubt that Ruby had sex with the defendant, from whom she received benefits," Boccassini said, adding that Berlusconi was well aware she was a minor.

DENIAL

Berlusconi flatly denies the accusations. El Mahroug, who staged a dramatic protest outside the Milan court last month, denies being a prostitute or having had sex with Berlusconi.

Boccassini portrayed Ruby as a "shrewd, intelligent girl who like some young people of the latest generations has only one objective: that of making it in the world of show business and making easy money".

When, in May 2010, she was held by police on suspicion of stealing a 3,000-euro bracelet, Berlusconi "was forced to intervene and abuse his office" to keep her quiet and cover up the affair, Boccassini said.

In a statement, Berlusconi called Boccassini's arguments "lies inspired by prejudice and hatred".

The sentencing request added to a morass of legal problems facing Berlusconi, who last week lost an appeal against a four-year sentence for tax fraud in connection with his Mediaset broadcasting empire. He has launched a second and final appeal against that sentence.

Berlusconi mounted a fierce attack on prosecutors over the weekend at a stormy rally in the northern city of Brescia that was attended by centre-right members of the government including Interior Minister Angelino Alfano.

Letta's own centre-left Democratic Party (PD) sharply criticized Alfano's presence at the rally and the prime minister warned his coalition partners that there could be no repeat if the government was to survive.

Berlusconi's campaign continued on Sunday with a lavish two-hour special on his own Canale 5 channel presenting his version of the "bunga bunga" evenings.

The program showed El Mahroug admitting that she had lied about certain aspects of her life to investigators but flatly denying any sexual relationship with Berlusconi and complaining at media representations of her as a prostitute.

It filmed the dining room and theatre at Berlusconi's palatial villa near Milan and presented an array of witnesses who said the evenings there were convivial parties where he entertained guests by singing and telling stories.

However several women who testified at the trial spoke of girls, sometimes dressed up as nuns, stripping off at the parties while performing raunchy pole dances.

How to Speak in Sound Bites ? PR Fuel ? Public Relations News ...

Speaking succinctly is important for a number of reasons. When you speak concisely, people are more likely to pay attention to what you?re saying and also to remember your message. Furthermore, if you?re being interviewed for a story on a news broadcast, editors will need to find short clips (sound bites) from your interview that they can use for the story. If you?re rambling on and on, it?s going to be hard for them to find a good clip to use.

Topic-sentence styled sound bites are really functional. When they?re self-contained that way, they are much easier to use for the video editor. Seems to me that?s part of the strategic value ? seems really foolish to spend a quantity of time doing an interview, and then have the folks trying to work with that material, have very few usable options. At that point you?ve wasted not only your own time, but theirs as well.

Sound bites are useful in a number of situations, including interviews, press releases, speeches, and press conferences. But make no mistake ? speaking in sound bites is an art. The good news is it?s an art you can master.

All you need to do is follow these simple tips to successfully speak in sound bites.

  • When being interviewed, include the original question in your answer ? Repeating the reporter?s question in your answer creates a sound bite that stands on its own. For example, if a reporter asks you: ?What was your reason for creating this product?? you might start your answer, ?The reason I created this product was because??

This makes the sound clip come across as seamless. It?s like you?re speaking directly to the person watching or listening to the interview.

  • Make it interesting ? Nobody remembers dry and boring. You have to find ways to make your sound bites stand out so people notice and remember what you say. How can you do this? Numerous ways: use metaphors, be witty, be folksy, include a personal story, show contrast (e.g. ?Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.?), ask a rhetorical question, rhyme?the options are limitless.
  • Know your message ? What are you trying to say? What?s the one main point you want to get across? Break it down to its simplest form, and focus on delivering that message.
  • Rehearse ? Great sound bites are rarely accidental. They are the result of careful crafting and plenty of practice. Try out different quotes to see what?s working and what needs to be improved. Keep rehearsing until you have your sound bites committed to memory and can deliver them in a natural way.

What are some of your tips for creating great sound bites? Share them with us by commenting below.?

Sun unleashes strongest solar flare of 2013 so far

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The sun has fired off a massive flare, the strongest solar eruption this year.

The powerful flare occurred Sunday and erupted on the side of the sun that was not facing Earth. While the planet was not hit with radiation, space weather forecasters say the solar blast briefly disrupted high-frequency radio signals.

Solar outbursts that are directed at Earth can affect communications systems and power grids and also produce colorful auroras.

NASA says radiation from the latest flare may stream toward two of its spacecraft, including the Spitzer Space Telescope. Engineers have the option to put them in safe mode to protect instruments from getting fried.

The side of the sun where Sunday's eruption occurred will rotate into Earth's view soon, allowing scientists to study the active region.

(AP) ? Orb is ready.

The Kentucky Derby winner put in his final workout before the Preakness, breezing four furlongs in 47.18 seconds, galloping out five furlongs in 59.54 and delighting trainer Shug McGaughey.

"I thought it was breathtaking," McGaughey said Monday morning.

With exercise rider Jennifer Patterson aboard, Orb seemed to move effortlessly around the track on a clear, sunny day. In fact, McGaughey called it more impressive than the colt's workout before he won the Derby by 2? lengths on May 4.

"For him to go off nice and relaxed in 24 and change and come home on his own the way he did, and gallop out the way he did, and drop his head and walk home, it sent cold chills up my back," the Hall of Fame trainer said.

After cooling down and receiving a sponge bath, Orb was loaded onto a van headed to Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. A win in the 1 3/16-mile Preakness on Saturday would set up a Triple Crown try in the Belmont Stakes on June 8. The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978.

McGaughey wasn't concerned with the fast fractions, which come nine days after running 1? miles in the Derby.

"I think it's a tribute to the way he came out of the Derby, and to come back and be able to have a work like that and do it the way he did it ? I couldn't be more thrilled," he said. "Right now I'm on cloud nine. The way he was striding today, the way he held his leads through the lane, I thought it was spectacular."

Orb, owned by the Phipps Stable and Stuart Janney III, takes a five-race winning streak in the Preakness, where he will face what look to be nine challengers. Among them are Derby runners Mylute (fifth), Oxbow (sixth), Will Take Charge (eighth), Itsmyluckyday (15th) and Goldencents (17th). Also set for the race is Departing, winner of the Illinois Derby.

"I think it's formidable," McGaughey said. "I know that Oxbow made a good run in the Derby. I never really kind of sat down and watched it and pinned it down. The other horse (Will Take Charge) got in some trouble. You've got to respect Departing coming in there off his race in the Illinois Derby and being relatively fresh. My main concern is just trying to get Orb over there the best way we possibly can and if he runs his race I think they'll know he's in there."

(AP) ? The Memphis Grizzlies call it grit and grind, and it got them through another ugly game.

Marc Gasol scored 20 points and hit two free throws with 1:03 left to put Memphis ahead to stay, and the Grizzlies held off Oklahoma City 87-81 Saturday to take a 2-1 lead in this Western Conference semifinal.

Gasol scored 16 in the second half as Memphis remained unbeaten at home in the postseason.

The Grizzlies pulled out the win in a choppy performance for both teams following a three-day layoff since Game 2 with the Thunder beating them at their own game, dominating the boards and in the paint. After struggling at the free throw line in Oklahoma City, the Grizzlies hit all six at the line in the final 1:03 to clinch it.

"We just stayed after it like we've done all year long," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "It's not always pretty. Tonight wasn't pretty, but it was pretty for us because we got the win."

Game 4 is Monday night in Memphis, and Hollins wants one more home win for a franchise in its second Western semifinal in two seasons. The Grizzlies lost to Oklahoma City in seven games in 2011 after splitting Games 3 and 4 in Memphis. But they are 18-1 at home since Feb. 8.

"I'd rather take my chances with where we're sitting now and try to win all of our home games," Hollins said. "We got a long way to go, and we got to keep battling."

Kevin Durant scored 25 points, but only two in the fourth quarter. A 91 percent free throw shooter in the regular season, Durant missed two with 39.3 seconds left. Durant also had 11 rebounds and five assists.

"It's frustrating, but we can't hang our heads," Durant said. "We have to keep playing and keep improving. We just have to learn from it. We have to embrace the tough times and get better from it. I believe in my teammates."

Though his teammates, with Russell Westbrook out with a knee injury, need to give him more help.

The Thunder had their worst scoring and shooting performance this postseason. Reggie Jackson had 16 points for Oklahoma city, and Kevin Martin and Serge Ibaka each added 13. Jackson and Ibaka also grabbed 10 rebounds apiece. Durant went 3 of 11 from the floor in the second half, and his teammates went a combined 23 of 69 for the game.

Tony Allen had his best game in this series, scoring 14 points for Memphis. Jerryd Bayless added 11. Zach Randolph scored only eight points but had 10 rebounds.

"It was definitely a good feeling because we didn't play the best Grizzlies' basketball that we know we can play as a team," Randolph said.

Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks insisted he liked the shots his Thunder took, even though they didn't get as many wide-open looks beyond the arc as they did in the first two games.

"We are hopeful that we get those same shots in the next game," Brooks said.

The Grizzlies built leads repeatedly, getting to as much as 10 in the second quarter.

Memphis won despite not winning in the categories the Grizzlies usually dominate. The Thunder outrebounded them 51-44, with a 14-5 edge on the offensive glass. The Thunder also outscored the Grizz 44-30 in the paint, with a 23-7 edge on fast-break points.

The Thunder didn't score after Derek Fisher hit a 3-pointer with 1:58 left, a shot tying for the eighth and final time at 81. The Grizzlies' edge came from getting to the line where they hit more free throws (23 of 28) than Oklahoma City even took (12 of 19).

"Obviously, they beat us in a lot of different areas tonight," said Memphis guard Mike Conley, who hit all four free throws in the final minute. "For us to come away with the win, we are very happy. We will take it, but it just goes to show we have a lot of work to do. We have to do better the next game."

The rust from the layoff showed early for both teams. Ibaka missed not one but two dunks in the first half, Thabo Sefolosha had an airball and the Grizzlies, who had been so good at limiting turnovers, had five in the first quarter alone.

Hollins switched up his defense on Durant from the first two games in Oklahoma City.

He didn't put Allen, who finished fifth in voting for Defensive Player of the Year, on Durant until the final minutes of Game 2. This time, he alternated Allen with Tayshaun Prince defending Durant throughout the first half. Allen played Durant most of the third, and that helped limit Durant to 2 of 7 shooting in the quarter as the Thunder went 4 of 20 from the floor.

"He is a great defender, don't get me wrong," Durant said about Allen. "But it's the Grizzlies' team defense. I need to make the right plays for my team. I missed a few shots in the second half."

Memphis led 66-60 at the end of the third quarter. The Grizzlies pushed that to 71-62 on a 3 by Keyon Dooling and a 19-foot jumper by Darrell Arthur. Then the Thunder scored six straight, the last on a dunk by Martin forcing Hollins to take a timeout.

The Grizzlies, who had hit only one of their first nine 3-pointers, hit 3 of 5 in the third quarter to take a 77-70 lead when Pondexter knocked down a 3 with 6:29 left. Pondexter also helped defend Durant in the fourth quarter.

The Thunder led 45-44 at halftime. Durant scored 14 of the Thunder's first 24 points as he connected on five of his first six shots.

The Grizzlies grabbed their biggest lead at 28-18 on a 28-footer by Bayless. Then Gasol picked up his second foul with 9:02 left and went to the bench for the rest of the half.

Notes: DeAngelo Williams, the former Memphis running back now with the NFL's Carolina Panthers, and rapper Lil Wayne had courtside seats with Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones also on hand. ... Durant extended his streak with 20 or more points to 35 straight playoff games. ... Durant had his second-lowest scoring game this postseason, a point off the 24 he had in the opener against Houston. ... The Thunder went 17-4 after a loss in the regular season. ... The Grizzlies had their 14th straight postseason sellout.

Indian companies at center of global cyber heist

By Dinesh Nair and Jim Finkle

DUBAI/BOSTON (Reuters) - Two companies with major operations in India were the weak links that opened the door to a $45 million global cyber heist brought to light by U.S. authorities this week.

EnStage Inc, which operates from Bangalore, and ElectraCard Services, which is based in Pune, processed card payments for the two Middle Eastern banks that were hit in the theft, according to several people familiar with the situation.

U.S. prosecutors said on Thursday that hackers broke into two card processing companies, raising the balances and withdrawal limits on accounts that were then exploited in coordinated ATM withdrawals around the world.

The prosecutors did not name the two companies but said one was based in India and the other in the United States.

According to a U.S. official and a bank employee, who both spoke on condition of anonymity, ElectraCard Services was the company that processed prepaid travel cards for National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah PSC (RAKBANK). RAKBANK suffered a $5 million coordinated heist at ATMs around the world on December 21 last year, according to the U.S. indictment.

Ramesh Mengawade, the chief executive of ElectraCard Services and its parent company, Opus Software Solutions, could not be reached through his assistant or by email on Saturday. Calls to the mobile phone of another company official were not answered.

EnStage, which is incorporated in Cupertino, California, is the company that processed card payments for Bank of Muscat of Oman, according to a source close to Bank of Muscat. Bank of Muscat lost $40 million in a coordinated heist on February 19, according to Thursday's indictment.

Officials at enStage could not be reached on Saturday, either in Bangalore or in Cupertino. In a statement in the Times of India, Chief Executive Govind Setlur said the company has implemented security enhancements and monitoring since the theft.

"Our customers were adversely affected by this sophisticated crime," Setlur said in the statement. "We are deeply committed to information security, and we will continue to take all reasonable measures to ensure our networks are secured from criminal actors."

MORE WORK FOR BIG PROCESSORS?

Bank of Muscat has not commented on the case.

MasterCard, the network under which the cards used in the heist were issued, has said its security was not compromised. MasterCard bought a 12.5 percent stake in ElectraCard in 2010, ElectraCard has said.

Cyber security experts said the global scope and speed of the $45 million bank theft was unprecedented. The global gang had operatives in 27 countries who fanned out to thousands of ATMs in a matter of hours, withdrawing money using fraudulent prepaid debit cards, according to U.S. prosecutors.

The U.S. Justice Department gave details of the heist on Thursday in an indictment against eight men accused of being the New York cell of the organization. The department said seven of the men have been arrested.

The ringleaders of the global operation were believed to be outside the United States, but U.S. prosecutors have declined to give details, citing the continuing investigation. Germany is the only other country so far to announce arrests.

Eddie Schwartz, chief information security officer for RSA Inc, a firm that helps banks fight payment card fraud, said that it is not surprising that hackers would target banks that rely on Indian firms to process transactions.

Schwartz, who is based in Washington, said there is not as much government oversight in India as there is in the United States and Western Europe.

"Hackers view India as a target. It's got a fast-moving economy, a fast-moving IT infrastructure," Schwartz said.

Madeline Aufseeser, a senior analyst with Aite Group who follows payments processors, said she was relieved to learn that the case appeared to be limited to smaller processors.

"It looks like an isolated, very targeted incident," she said, noting that the major firms in the industry have highly sophisticated protocols to limit fraud damages.

The big players include First Data Corp, FIS, Galileo Mastercard Inc's Mastercard Integrated Processing Solutions, Tsys and Visa Inc's Visa Debit Processing Service.

Philip Philliou, managing partner of Philliou Partners LLC, a firm that helps banks and retailers select payment processors, predicted smaller processing firms will lose business as a result of this theft. Banks will decide they are not willing to assume the additional risk that comes with using smaller firms, he said.

According to company documents unearthed by the website TechCrunch, Microsoft is offering to purchase the digital assets of Nook Media for $1 billion. This would include Barnes & Noble?s Nook e-readers, e-books, and tablets.

Also interesting: according to the documents, Barnes & Noble plans to stop producing its Nook tablet devices by the end of the fiscal year 2014. Instead, the company is focusing on a plan where content produced by Nook could be accessed by users through apps on what the company called ?third-party partner? hardware. The documents didn?t specifically mention Nook e-readers, according to TechCrunch. Whether this would involve Microsoft tablets such as the Microsoft Surface is unknown.

Microsoft had already teamed up with Barnes & Noble, investing $300 million in the company in April of last year and announcing that it would be working with B&N on the digital side of its business.

Neither Barnes & Noble nor Microsoft commented to TechCrunch for the article.

According to Reuters, Wall Street was obviously heartened by the news ? B&N shares increased 22 percent after the report of the possible purchase was released.

What would the deal mean for each company? Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at market research firm NPD, pointed out to PCWorld that Microsoft would have a partner that would give it more entertainment content for its devices.

?It appears that Microsoft [with its rumored Nook buy] is looking for a content partner brand that they can use to help develop content opportunities beyond the movies and music they provide today through Xbox Live,? Baker said. The content with Nook could also include e-textbooks, a growing market.

However, for Barnes & Noble, Forbes writer Abram Brown said a B&N without the Nook reminded him uncomfortably of another business: the now-defunct Borders.

?Barnes & Noble would lose the unit that added attention and store traffic... and kept its stock higher,? he wrote. ?It?s not a clear parallel yet to Borders, but it?s hard to ignore the comparison.?

Twin Cities Housing Market ? More Good News in March ? Real ...

Market ReportMarch 2013? ?The Market is Building ? New Home Construction Picks Up

?Prices are up and the Inventory of Homes for Sale Remains Low

Housing data in March continues to show improvement compared to the same period last year. The median price of a traditional (non-distressed) home sale was $209,900, an increase of 2.4% over the $205,000 reported in February and a 6.04% increase over the March 2012 median price of $197,950. The median price of $209,900 is the highest median price seen since last summer. The volume of closed sales in March 2013 was 3,732, up considerably from the 2,839 recorded in February 2013 and close to the same as the 3,692 recorded in March 2012.? The number of existing homes available for sale remains at historically low levels. In March of 2013 there were 12,941 homes available for sale. This compares to 18,291 in March 2012 and 23,467 in March 2011. See the table below for previous year?s March inventory levels. In March of 2013 there were only 3.47 homes for sale for every closed sale. Since the beginning of 2012 the inventory level of homes for sale has been consistently running 25% ? 30% below the previous year?s level.

?New Construction Continues to Surge

While the number of new housing starts is a long way from the levels seen in the mid-2000?s, activity in the first quarter of 2013 is substantially improved. The low number of homes for sale along with a continued improvement in general economic conditions are creating opportunities for new home builders as they are able to add to the supply of homes available to potential buyers. The data shows that the construction and sale of new homes continues to play a larger role in the Minneapolis / St. Paul housing market. Year to date through April 11 of 2013 there were 1,177 building permits issued for single family home construction. This is a 54% increase compared to the 763 permits issued during the same period in 2012. The closed sales data in March shows a similar trend. The sale of newly constructed homes in March is up 12.2% compared to March of 2012.

?Employment plays a major role in household formation.? As employment increases more people will be moving into places of their own. The unemployment rate in Minnesota is well below the national average at 5.5%. The state added 50,800 new jobs in the last 6 months. These positive employment indicators will increase the rate of household formation, requiring additional housing units. Since the inventory of existing homes for sale is expected to remain at historically low levels in the near term future, look for continued growth in the number of new homes built in 2013.? The increase in the construction of new homes is beginning to create a shortage of finished lots. The number of vacant developed lots in Minneapolis / St. Paul has been decreasing over the last several years. At the end of the first quarter of 2012 there were 24,559 vacant developed lots in the Twin Cities metro area (a 101 month supply). That number had decreased to 24,559 (a 58 month supply) by the end of the first quarter of 2013. As the shortage continues home builders are finding they have to pay premium prices for desirable lots.

?The Percent of Distressed Sales Continues to Moderate

?When comparing the total number of closed sales from year-to-year there is one important difference: the growth of traditional sales. In March of 2012 there were 1,885 traditional, non-distressed sales (51.8% of the total sales); in March 2013 there were 2,318 traditional sales (62.1% of the total sales), an increase in the percentage on non-distressed sales of nearly 20%. The past few months of traditional sales totaling at least 50% of all sales is an encouraging sign that distressed properties are becoming less numerous. As we move into the spring and summer of this year we should see a stronger housing market dominated by traditional sales. Look for the percentage of distressed sales to continue to moderate as we move into the summer selling season. As the economy continues to improve there will be fewer foreclosures and short sales on the. ?Increasing median sale prices means that fewer homeowners will be ?underwater? and an improving employment situation will lead to fewer borrowers becoming seriously delinquent on their mortgages.

?The UST Traditional Sale Composite Index decreased again for in March (down 1.7%), moving from 990 in February to 973 in March. The decline is a reflection of a combination of several factors. The first is that the index is based on a 3 month moving average. Even though the median sale price of a traditional home increased in March, the index is being influenced by the declines that occurred in January and February. Secondly, the index has also been influenced by the very low number of homes available for sale. That being said, it should be noted that despite the fact the index has been declining for the last several months, throughout that period it has remained well above the levels recorded in the previous year. March?s Traditional Sale Composite Index of 990 is 6.8 % higher than the 911 recorded in March 2012.

The UST Residential Real Estate Short Sale Composite Market Health Index was 779 in March, a 3.6 increase compared to one year ago.

The foreclosure market?s health as represented by the UST Residential Real Estate Foreclosure Composite Index increased slightly in March, moving from 701 in January to 703. This increase was driven by an over $18,000 increase in the median sale price of foreclosed homes between February at $116,500 and March at $134,900.The index is up 14.7% compared to March 2012 and has recorded year over year increases for each month of the preceding year.

PFT: Ex-Steeler Greene: Players put money over wins

West Virginia v TexasGetty Images

As Jets quarterback Geno Smith prepares for his first series of NFL practice sessions at the team?s rookie minicamp, one of the guys who presided over the offensive practices at Smith?s most recent stop is defending Smith from criticism.

?I never got the sense he was a diva or pampered or anything in my involvement with him,? West Virginia offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson told Brian Costello of the New York Post. ?I never had one problem with him other than he watched too much film.?

Before the draft, Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly skewered Smith.? After the draft, Yahoo! Sports and ESPN.com published critical quotes from anonymous sources regarding Smith.

?He?s going to play for a long time,? Dawson said this week. ?I think the Jets are going to be more than happy that they have him.? He?s going to work his [butt] off. It?s almost a positive for the Jets organization because if everything would have went smooth and he had been picked in the top five he probably wouldn?t be as motivated as he is right now.

?In my talks with him after the draft, he?s so fired up right now to prove this [jerk] wrong that he?s going to work and do it.?

Compounding Smith?s problems is that his camp didn?t launch an aggressive counterattack in response to Nawrocki?s scathing scouting report.? And with Smith firing his agents only days after the draft, he had no one in place to attempt to change the narrative and alter the perception arising from the Yahoo! Sports and ESPN reports.

Perception in this context is key.? His reported plan to leave the draft (ESPN reported it, Smith has denied it) after the first night fueled the perception that he can?t handle adversity, for those who already believed that.? His decision to fire his agents in the wake of the draft fueled the perception that he?s inclined to externalize blame.

In fact, we?ve (I?ve) been criticized, primarily by those who tend to look for reasons to criticize us (me), for pointing out the connection between Smith?s reported plan to leave the draft and the reaction from those who already have a dim view of him.

It?s a reasonable at worst, dead-on 100-percent accurate at best interpretation of the impact of the behavior on the opinions of those who believe the negative things reported about Smith.? Those who think I?m biased against Smith, who played college football at West Virginia University, apparently aren?t aware of my Mountaineer connection.? (I grew up in West Virginia, went to law school in Morgantown, live 30 miles from the school, and attended every home football game that I can.)

What I wrote about Smith after the first round of the draft contained the same advice I would have given Smith if he were my client, friend, cousin, nephew, or son.

Good advice is what he and every young player (and every young person) needs.? Here?s hoping that Geno Smith gets it from everyone around him, and that he heeds it.

White House, lawmakers discuss how to combat military sex crimes

WASHINGTON: Top White House officials and lawmakers met on Thursday to discuss how to toughen up laws to prevent and punish sexual assault in the military, and provide better support for victims of the crimes.

A bipartisan group of nine senators and seven representatives talked about their ideas to address the long-standing problem which hit the headlines this week, prompting President Barack Obama to angrily vow to "root this out completely."

On Tuesday, the Pentagon released its 2012 annual report on sexual assault in the military, which showed a 37 percent jump in estimated sex crimes to 26,000.

The Air Force was embarrassed after the head of its sexual assault prevention office was charged for drunkenly groping a woman in a parking lot near the Pentagon.

Democratic Senator Kay Hagan of North Carolina, who was at the meeting, said the rising statistics were alarming.

"Military sexual assault is a crisis in our armed forces, and one that I have heard about first-hand from service members" in North Carolina, Hagan said on the social networking site Twitter.

The meeting was convened by Valerie Jarrett, a top adviser to Obama, and Tina Tchen, chief of staff to first lady Michelle Obama. Among other White House officials who attended the meeting was Kathryn Ruemmler, counsel to the president.

"The group discussed various legislative proposals as well as actions that the administration could take to hold offenders accountable, improve the reporting process, support victims, and work towards the prevention of sexual assault," a White House official said after the meeting.

The official did not spell out those actions.

There are several bills in the works.

Democratic Senator Patty Murray of Washington and Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, who were at the White House meeting, introduced a bill this week which includes measures that would provide victims with a military lawyer, and would refer sexual assault cases to the court-martial level.

Companion legislation are to be introduced in the House of Representatives by Tim Ryan, an Ohio Democrat.

Ryan, who was at the meeting, called the problem "an epidemic that threatens the very foundations of our military."

Republican Representative Jackie Walorski of Indiana, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said the meeting helped develop strategy for passing new legislation.

Walorski has introduced a bill providing whistleblower protections for survivors of military sexual violence.

Ohio Representative Mike Turner, a leading Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, said the annual defense policy bills for 2014 could provide vehicles for legislation to combat the problem.

"I feel that there is positive momentum on this issue," said Turner.

Researchers from IMDEA-Nanociencia Institute and from Autonoma and Complutense Universities of Madrid (Spain) have managed to give graphene magnetic properties. The breakthrough, published in the journal 'Nature Physics', opens the door to the development of graphene-based spintronic devices, that is, devices based on the spin or rotation of the electron, and could transform the electronics industry.

Scientists were already aware that graphene, an incredible material formed of a mesh of hexagonal carbon atoms, has extraordinary conductivity, mechanical and optical properties. Now it is possible to give it yet one more property: magnetism, implying a breakthrough in electronics.

This is revealed in the study that the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies in Nanoscience (IMDEA-Nanociencia) and Autonoma Autonomous (UAM) and Complutense (UCM) universities of Madrid have just published in the 'Nature Physics' journal. Researchers have managed to create a hybrid surface from this material that behaves as a magnet.

"In spite of the huge efforts to date of scientists all over the world, it has not been possible to add the magnetic properties required to develop graphene-based spintronics. However these results pave the way to this possibility," highlights Prof. Rodolfo Miranda, Director of IMDEA-Nanociencia.

Spintronics is based on the charge of the electron, as in traditional electronics, but also on its spin, which determines its magnetic moment. A material is magnetic when most of its electrons have the same spin.

As the spin can have two values, its use adds two more states to traditional electronics. Thus, both data processing speed and quantity of data to be stored on electronic devices can be increased, with applications in fields such as telecommunications, computing, energy and biomedicine.

In order to develop a graphene-based spintronic device, the challenge was to 'magnetise' the material, and researchers from Madrid have found the way through the quantum and nanoscience world.

The technique involves growing an ultra perfect grapheme film over a ruthenium single crystal inside an ultra high vacuum chamber whereorganic molecules of tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ) are evaporated on the grapheme surface. TCNQ is a molecule that acts as a semiconductor at very low temperatures in certain compounds.

On observing results through an scanning tunnelling microscope (STM), scientists were surprised: organic molecules had organised themselves and were regularly distributed all over the surface, interacting electronically with the graphene-ruthenium substrate.

"We have proved in experiments how the structure of the TCNQ molecules over graphene acquires long-range magnetic order with electrons positioned in different bands according to their spin," clarifies Prof. Amadeo L. Vzquez de Parga.

Meanwhile, his colleague Prof. Fernando Martin has conducted modelling studies that have shown that, although graphene does not interact directly with the TCNQ, it does permit a highly efficient charge transfer between the substrate and the TCNQ molecules and allows the molecules to develop long range magnetic order.

The result is a new graphene-based magnetised layer, which paves the way towards the creation of devices based on what was already considered as the material of the future, but which now may also have magnetic properties.

Syrian warplanes pound rebel positions in north

BEIRUT (AP) ? Anti-regime activists say Syrian warplanes are pounding rebel positions in two northern provinces.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the air force is targeting opposition forces in the battle for the Mannagh air base outside of northern city of Aleppo. Rebels stormed the base near the border with Turkey on Sunday. They captured parts of it but could not hold on, because of the regime's superior air power.

In neighboring Idlib province, there are heavy clashes outside several army bases near the government-controlled provincial capital. Government troops and fighter planes are hitting the rebels, the Observatory said.

Thursday's fighting came a day after the announcement of a new U.S-Russian initiative to end two-year conflict through negotiations.
