Americans Underestimate Dangers of Obesity

by Chris Curley on January 9, 2013

Most Americans know that obesity is a big risk factor for heart disease and diabetes, but many are still in the dark about other ailments associated with a big waistline, the Associated Press reported Jan. 7.

While 70 percent of Americans know that obesity increases your risk of heart disease and diabetes, just 7 percent are aware that obesity also increases your risk of many kinds of cancer, a new survey by the Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reveals. Only 15 percent of Americans know that obesity can lead to joint pain and arthritis.

In addition, though obesity is a known risk factor for sleep apnea, asthma, and poor sleep in general, just 5 percent of people associate bad sleep with excess weight, according to the poll. And seemingly no one is aware the obesity can lead to infertility in men.

Doctors may play a role in raising awareness of obesity risks, the survey indicates. Only slightly more than half (52 percent) of respondents say they?ve talked about the health risks of being overweight with their doctor, a statistic even more surprising considering that most people underestimate how overweight they are.
