How Will Kickstarter Change The Gaming Industry? | Business 2 ...

I think Kickstarter will change the way we look at computer games, the invention of different tech to play games including tablets and smart phones means that games do not have to be a multimillion selling, 10,000 strong team affair.

Small businesses now more than ever have the potential to create millions by crowd funding, being able to raise money by offering a return to the fundraiser, this may be offering a free copy of the game to the funder, a percentage in the company, a T-shirt or other services that the business can provide in return for funding potential

The scope is massive and it?s not just gaming.

In 2012 more dollars where pledged to gaming than any other group, a total of $50 million.? That is 50 MILLION dollars going straight to small studios to fund gaming projects, and Kickstarter and its rivals are growing.

When kickstarter began, a mere $48, 190 was raised on gaming projects, not even 1% of the total raised just four years later. It means that in 2012, 23% of every dollar placed has gone straight to video game projects.

Kickstarter have also announced that gaming backers are the most generous too with the average pledged to 2.43 projects, this could be due to the amount of inspiration and passion the community has for reviving old classics or creating new ones.

Only 23% of games have been successful in their funding which is much less than the average project usually gaining 34%, the average video game raises $96,000 which for gaming development is not huge but 12% of all projects never receive a single pledge.

Where did this massive boost in gaming projects on kickstarter come from?

It came from one single game ?Double Fine Adventure? which raised $1million dollars in just 24 hours an incredible feat in early February. The funding didn?t happen by chance. Tim Schafer is a renowned game designer and his work includes the secret of Monkey Island, brutal legend and a decade of work at lucasarts. His marketing including a documentary on the giant game Minecraft as well as being given a talk spot at the 2012 Game developers conference. The strategy he developed before launching the kickstarter campaign allowed the project to go viral and the money poured in.

Incredible after Double fine was announced and the money flooded in, gaming projects on kickstarter nearly quadrupled month on month.

How will Kickstarter Change the Gaming Industry?

Kickstarter is still finding its feet, and with its launch in the UK and Europe, it could reach to well over $100 million in video game funding alone, Kickstarter could be the source that gamers need to make the next Angry Birds or even the next Call Of Duty.

Marketing the projects is a huge task and inevitably not a cheap affair; there is huge scope in developing strategies and the innovation behind getting the message out there. Still with enough thought, planning, creativity and know how there is absolutely no stopping a gaming project from meeting and exceeding its targets.

I would love to hear your comment about Kickstarter or if you are/ or are trying to launch a project via a crowd funding website!
