2 U.S. military advisers shot in high-security office in Kabul, Afghanistan

A gunman killed two American military advisers with shots to the back of the head Saturday inside a heavily guarded ministry building, and NATO ordered military workers out of Afghan ministries as protests raged for a fifth day over the burning of copies of the Quran at a U.S. army base.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Interior Ministry attack, saying it was retaliation for the Quran burnings, after the U.S. servicemen ? a lieutenant colonel and a major ? were found dead on the floor of an office that only people who know a numerical combination can get into, Afghan and Western officials said.

The top commander of U.S. and NATO forces recalled all international military personnel from the ministries, an unprecedented action in the decade-long war that highlights the growing friction between Afghans and their foreign partners at a critical juncture in the war.

The U.S.-led coalition is trying to mentor and strengthen Afghan security forces so they can lead the fight against the Taliban and foreign troops can go home. That mission, however, requires a measure of trust at a time when anti-Western sentiment is at an all-time high.

Afghan Defense Minister Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak called U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to apologize for the shooting and offer his condolences, Pentagon press secretary George Little said in a statement released in Washington.

"This act is unacceptable and the United States condemns it in the strongest possible terms," Little said.

Security is tight in the capital, which is covered in snow, and foreigners working at the U.S. Embassy and at international organizations have been banned from leaving their compounds.

U.S. officials said they were searching for the assailant, who has not been identified by name or nationality.

The two American service members were found by another foreigner who went into the room, according to the Afghan official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose details about the shootings. They were shot in the back of the head, according to Western officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information. Authorities were poring over security camera video for clues, the Afghan official said.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid identified the shooter as one of their sympathizers, Abdul Rahman. He said an accomplice inside the ministry helped Rahman get inside the compound to kill the Americans in retaliation for the Quran burnings.

"After the attack, Rahman informed us by telephone that he was able to kill four high-ranking American advisers," Mujahid said. The Taliban often inflate death tolls and sometimes claim responsibility for killings they did not conduct.

Little, the Pentagon press secretary, said Wardak indicated that President Hamid Karzai was assembling religious leaders and other senior Afghan officials to take urgent steps to protect coalition forces.

U.S. Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, met with Afghan Interior Minister Bismullah Khan Mohammadi, who offered both his condolences to the families of the victims and his apologies, Little said.

Afghanistan's interior and defense ministers are expected in Washington next week.

Allen said he recalled all NATO personnel from the ministries "for obvious force protection reasons" but also said the alliance remains committed to its partnership with the Afghan government. NATO forces have advisers embedded in many Afghan ministries. The advisers are helping to develop the ministries so that Afghans can take the lead by the end of 2014, when foreign combat forces are to transfer control of security to Afghan security forces.

At least 28 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since Tuesday, when it first emerged that Qurans and other religious materials had been thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air Field, a large U.S. base north of Kabul.

President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials have apologized for what they said was a mistake, but their regrets have not quelled the deadly protests.

An Afghan soldier turned his gun on foreign troops, killing two American soldiers, during one riot outside a U.S. base in Nangarhar province on Thursday. It was the latest in a rising number of incidents where Afghan soldiers or policemen, or gunmen wearing their uniforms, have killed NATO forces. Last month, France suspended its training program and threatened to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan a year ahead of schedule after an Afghan soldier shot and killed four French soldiers on a base in the east.

Karzai has said that the Afghan people have a right to protest the Quran burnings, but he urged them to demonstrate peacefully and refrain from destroying property. In a statement on Saturday, Karzai urged Afghan security forces to be patient with the protesters.

Hundreds of demonstrators staged peaceful protests in Afghanistan, but ones in Laghman, Kunduz and Logar provinces turned violent.

"The culprits of the burning of the holy Quran should be arrested and hanged to death in public," said Mohammad Karim, one of 1,000 protesters who burned tires and threw stones at Afghan police in Mohammad Agha district of Logar province, south of Kabul. "We don't accept it when they say 'We apologize. We apologize.' We don't want Americans here at all."

Laghman provincial police chief Abdul Rahman Sarjang said about 1,000 protesters threw stones at Afghan security forces, smashed windows of government buildings and tried to attack the nearby governor's house in the provincial capital of Mehterlam.

In Kunduz, the capital of Kunduz province in northeastern Afghanistan, more than 1,000 protesters threw rocks at government buildings and a U.N. office, said Sarwer Hussaini, a spokesman for the provincial police. He said the police fired into the air to try to disperse the crowd. Dr. Saad Mukhtar, health department director in Kunduz, said at least three protesters died and 50 others were injured in the melee.

In a statement, the U.N. mission in Afghanistan said the U.N. had deep respect for the Islamic faith and understood why Muslims were upset about the desecration of their holy book, but urged the demonstrators to exercise self-restraint and not let militants use the protests to foment violence.

Deb Riechmann and Rahim Faiez of The Associated Press wrote this report. Patrick Quinn, Heidi Vogt and Amir Shah in Kabul, Robert Burns in Washington and Slobodan Lekic in Brussels contributed.

Disparity tourism in Sweden

'Upper-class safaris' in the suburbs of Stockholm take participants between neighborhoods to highlight widening economic disparities.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

?In Sweden, a group of disaffected young people is challenging the country?s image as an egalitarian, equal-opportunity society. How? By organizing ?upper-class safaris,? which load class-conscious participants onto buses that take them from the center of Stockholm, the Swedish capital, to two of its eastern suburbs: Fisks?tra, a working-class neighborhood, and Solsidan, a wealthy one.

The journey between the two suburbs takes five minutes, but, says tour organizer Martin Fredriksson, they are ?worlds apart.?

The unconventional sightseeing trip is organized by Allt ?t Alla (Everything for Everyone), an association that abides by the Marxist credo ?from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.?

At the end of 2011, reports from Statistics Sweden and the Swedish Center for Business and Policy Studies highlighted widening economic disparities and showed that the correlation between family background and income has become more pronounced.

Allt ?t Alla insists that such disparities must be understood as a class issue and that the safari tours could spark a serious discussion through a fun initiative.

But well-to-do residents of Solsidan may not be willing. They have objected to the invasion of their privacy and to being likened to animals.

New theory shows that neither birth nor death stops a flock

Friday, February 24, 2012

Neither births nor deaths stop the flocking of organisms. They just keep moving, says theoretical physicist John J. Toner of the University of Oregon. The notion, he says, has implications in biology and eventually could point to new cancer therapies.

Picture any scenario in which self-propelled organisms -- animals, birds, bacteria, molecules within cells, cancer cells, fish, and even tiny plastic rods on a vibrating table -- move as a swarm or flock in the same direction. Eighteen years ago, Toner co-developed two equations that together provide a complete theory of flocking for "immortal" flocks -- those in which creatures are not being born and dying while the moving.

Now he has extended that work to include the effects of birth and death.

The new equations are as complete a description of flocks as the Navier-Stokes equation is of fluid dynamics. This equation, named after French physicist and engineer Claude-Louis Navier and British scientist George Gabriel Stokes applies equally well to all fluids; air, water, honey and the oil from the Gulf of Mexico disaster are all described by it. All of the differences between these very different fluids can be incorporated into the Navier-Stokes equation by changing the value of one number, called "the viscosity." Large values apply to sticky fluids like honey and oil, while smaller values describe air and water.

The Navier-Stokes equation has been used successfully for more than a century in the design of aircraft, automobiles, plumbing and power stations.

Toner's equations likewise work for all flocks, and contain some numbers that must be adjusted to account for differences between different kinds of flocks. The earlier work on immortal flocks has been applied to the flocking behavior of birds, particularly studies of starlings in Rome by Andrea Cavagna and Irene Giardina.

In a new paper -- "Birth, Death, and Flight: A Theory of Malthusian Flocks," published in the Feb. 24 issue of the journal Physical Review Letters -- Toner shows that flocking is even robust against birth and death. The finding, he said, is especially important for many other organisms that flock, especially bacteria, which may contain millions of individuals that are constantly dying and being replaced by the reproduction of others as the swarm moves.

"A flock can keep moving in the same direction for times much longer than the lifetime of any individual member," said Toner, a member of the UO Institute of Theoretical Science and a professor in the physics department. "Individuals are being born and dying but their direction and motion can persist much longer than the lifetime of any individual creature."

Secondly, he added, the density changes of such a "mortal flock" -- where some members are leaving by death and joining by birth -- create persistent but predictable fluctuations. "Birth and death are very important in microbiological flocks, such as swarms of bacteria or in collections of self-propelled molecules that flock in most living cells."

This fundamental new knowledge already is applicable to understanding the movement of molecules within cells -- in particular, mitotic spindles that launch the machinery of cell development and division, Toner said.

In mitotic spindles, individual molecules live for only about 20 minutes, but spindles live and continue their work for days, he said. "The motion continues as dead molecules are replaced by newly synthesized molecules, as well as by molecules which immigrate in to take their places."

Through the application of his new theory to the study of mitotic spindles, Toner said, it may be possible to design specifically targeted cancer therapies that, unlike current chemotherapies, would only kill aberrant, or diseased cells, and allow desirable, healthy ones to live. "In reality, such applications are a long way off," said Toner, whose research is supported by the National Science Foundation.

"This study shows us how fundamental physics and mathematics deployed to explain an everyday occurrence in nature can spin off with potentially life-saving medical applications," said Kimberly Andrews Espy, vice president for research and innovation at the UO. "This cutting-edge research conducted at the University of Oregon is another great example of the widespread applications and potential benefits that basic research and the promise it holds to address the real problems of today and tomorrow."

In September, Toner will embark on a one-year sabbatical to do additional research on flocking, or collective behavior, at IBM Yorktown Heights and the University of California, Berkeley, under a fellowship from the New York City-based Simons Foundation.

This release is available in Spanish.

Researchers at the University of Granada and the university hospital Virgen de las Nieves in Granada have developed a new radiotherapy technique that is much less toxic than that traditionally used and only targets cancerous tissue.

This new protocol provides a less invasive but equally efficient cancer postoperative treatment for cases of cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx.

The study -conducted between 2005 and 2008- included 80 patients diagnosed with epidermoid cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx, who had undergone lymph node removal. The affected nodes were located by the surgeon during the intervention and classified into different risk levels. Classification allowed physicians to target the areas at a higher risk of recurrence. This way, neck areas at a lower risk of containing residual cancer cells were not irradiated. Researchers achieved both to minimize the side effects of radiotherapy, and to reduce treatment discontinuation, thus achieving the therapy to be more effective.

A Highly Toxic Treatment

Over 70% of oral and pharynx cancer treated with surgery require supplementary treatment with radiotherapy occasionally associated to chemotherapy, because of the high risk for recurrence and spread through the lymph nodes. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are highly toxic, mainly due to the ulceration of the mucous membranes lining the oral cavity; toxicity leads may patients to stop the treatment, which significantly reduces the chances of cure.

By using the risk map obtained with the collaboration of the surgeon and the pathologist, an individualized treatment was designed and adapted to the specific risk level of recurrence in each neck area. The volume of tissue irradiated was significantly smaller than that usually irradiated with traditional techniques.

This trial was led by the radiation oncologist at the university hospital Virgen de las Nieves, Miguel Martnez Carrillo, and conducted in collaboration with the Services of Radiation Oncology, Medical Physics, Maxillofacial Surgery and Pathology of the university hospital Virgen de las Nieves, and the University of Granada Department of Radiology and Physical Medicine

After a three-year follow up, using this new technique, scientists achieved to reduce the volume of irradiated tissue in 44% of patients. By this new technique, irradiation of an average volume of 118 cc of tissue was avoided. A total of 95% of patients completed radiotherapy and presented significantly lower toxicity than patients treated with the traditional technique. Recurrence rates did not increase.

This study was coordinated by University of Granada professors Rosario del Moral vila and Jos Mariano Ruiz de Almodvar Rivera. The results of this study will be published in the next issue of the journal Radiation Oncology.

Hunting Park: Community Groups Are 'United' for Park Restoration ...

Leroy Fisher, co-founder and president of Hunting Park United, led the organization at its February meeting.

For years, Hunting Park United has worked hard to restore Hunting Park and the surrounding community to its former glory. Before the park became a breeding ground for drugs and crime, it was a centerpiece in North Philadelphia for sports, music and family outings.

Leroy Fisher, a resident of Hunting Park, first began his heavy involvement in the community in 1992 when he started the Hunting Park Aztecs after-school sports program. In 2009, that activism eventually evolved into Hunting Park United, an organization that took a stand against the issues that plagued the community.? Fisher serves as the organization?s co-founder and president.

?We?re able to be the steering committee, the community?s voice with the projects that happen here in the park,? Fisher said.

Every month, residents, local leaders and representatives of various organizations meet at the Hunting Park Recreation Center to discuss problems and advancements as well as create initiatives for the community.

December 1, 2011 marked the opening of Hunting Park?s branch of the Esperanza Health Center. As a result of community outreach, federal grants were allotted to the construction of the health center. ChrisAnne Smith, community relations and programs coordinator for Esperanza Health Center, expressed her knowledge of the need in the community for health facilities.

?There are very few health centers in and around Hunting Park. There are private doctors offices that the community has expressed dissatisfaction and disappointment in,? Smith said. ?We?re glad to be here because the need is very great in Hunting Park.?

The February meeting harbored over 40 representatives from many organizations such as the Enterprise Center, the Lenfest Center, local church groups, community activists and the Food Trust.

The Fairmount Park Conservancy has been an essential tool in the revitalization project. The Conservancy started its work in Hunting Park in 2008, then began its collaboration with Hunting Park United in 2009 to begin phase one of the project. Since then, both organizations have worked together closely to ensure that the park becomes a safe haven for the community once again.

Members of Hunting Park United discussed project advancements as well as future goals for the organization.

?The conservancy is an angel in the sky,? Fisher said. ?They came looking for residents who wanted to be apart of taking back this area. Luckily I was able to be apart of that and I just think it?s a blessing to take part.?

Meg Holscher, Director of Development for the Fairmount Park Conservancy, shared a similar sentiment while working on this project.

?Seeing that it is a network of partners that are working together to lift of this park, that is what?s truly amazing about these meetings,? Holscher said. ?It?s an honor for us to work with this community. ?

Phase one of the revitalization process includes the baseball and football fields, tennis courts, two playgrounds, a community garden, a farmers? market and loop road lighting. The first part of phase two will be the restoration of the concession stands in the park, which will commence by the end of the year. Joint efforts by the Conservancy and Hunting Park United will also include events for Philadelphia?s ?Love Your Park Week? this May and a Family Fun Day by the start of the summer. By creating new events and programs in the park, it is expected that love and memories will fill the park once again.

?What we?re hearing from people is a lot memories of how people used this park and we?re seeing that people are starting to use it again that way,? Holscher said.

Sharon Whaley and other Hunting Park residents took part in the meeting.

Sharon Whaley, a community activist and 45-year resident of Hunting Park, started attending the meetings back in 2009 and brought her friends to partake in the revitalization.

?This park was split for a long time, but now it?s starting to come together and people are starting to see the changes such as the community garden and the lights,? Whaley said. ?They want to know what?s going on! It?s really bringing people back into the park.?

With the many new developments occurring in and around the park, teamwork became the operative word when getting things accomplished. Steve Horton, from the Enterprise Center believed that the key to the revitalization efforts is contained within the residents of Hunting Park.

?It?s essentially being able to control your own destiny. We?re of the strong belief that it?s about we, not me. And it?s working with folks as a team and making sure it?s a collaborative effort,? Horton said. ?This needs to be a locally owned, locally operated type of venture with stake holders from the community.?

With the new lights lining the park streets and the dedication ceremony for the revival of the baseball field scheduled for April 13, Hunting Park United showed no signs of slowing down progression. President Fisher encouraged all community members to attend these meetings and to have an active part in the many new changes to come in the area.

?Come out and be involved, your voice matters. The direction of our community is led by us and we have a voice when we come together,? Fisher said. ?It?s not like what you see in the news about Hunting Park being a bad place. This is our home, we care about our home, and we?re taking it back and doing great things.?

Why Super Nanny's Method Is Wrong | The Baby Sleep Site ...

Recently, I had a client tell me that another sleep consultant was leading her towards cry it out by telling her something like ?If you are in the room, that is like holding an aspirin in front of someone with a headache.? and how cruel that is. This was an interesting statement that made me pause to consider whether this other consultant was right. Let?s discuss!

Let?s go back to you teaching your child how to ride a bike without training wheels (and why crying is sometimes part of sleep training no matter what). Now, let?s assume your child falls off the bike, scrapes her leg and starts crying. You have the training wheels right there in your hand. You just took them off for goodness sakes! Do you put them back on? Do you give your child a hug? Do you wipe her tears? Or, do you leave her to herself to deal with it? Do you just stand there not doing anything? I can bet $100 that almost everyone would say that you?d give her a hug and wipe her tears!

I recently watched this video of Super Nanny?s method of transitioning a co-sleeping child to his own bed.

The biggest problem I have with this video/method is the mom couldn?t console her child even a little bit? That is outrageous to me! True, that it was better at least the mom was in the room, but I don?t understand what the harm would be to console her child. You are changing a long-term (3 years!) routine of sleeping together and even if you are standing firm that you are transitioning him to his own sleep space, it doesn?t make sense to me that you can?t reassure him, give him a hug, and try to help him settle there. Just because you are consoling him doesn?t mean you have to ?give in? right? So, in this regard, I agree that this seems cruel, especially on the first night. In my toddler sleep book, I have a much different approach for long-time co-sleepers and I can bet that this mom would have a difficult (I might even say impossible) time sticking with this during any night-waking, after Jo is gone, and through any backsliding. Jo did not give this mom a routine to follow that everyone could feel comfortable with! As I say quite frequently, the best plan is the one you can stick to, not always the most ?logical? (whatever that means to you, because this video is illogical to me :) ).

This is an area that bothers me about traditional ?sleep trainers? is that it?s either all or nothing. Why can?t there be an in between? I?m all about baby steps while sleep training.

Does this mean I never think there?s a time when maybe your persistent baby or toddler needs to have firmer limits? Absolutely not. There is a HUGE difference between a baby or toddler who CAN self-soothe and who is CHOOSING not to. There is a difference between you taking a few days to a month to teach your baby or toddler a new routine and then they are still resistant to it or simply exerting their strong will. Expectations are everything and every situation has unique aspects to it. You know your baby best, in that regard.

Does this mean that some babies or toddlers won?t be infinitely more frustrated you are there with the breast, bottle, pacifier, or bouncing ball, but not using it? No. Some will truly hate that and you may do more harm than good staying in the room. But, does it hurt to try? Does it hurt to first teach the new routine before you expect them to do it on their own or alone without your encouragement and reassurance? Everyone will have a different pace to sleep training (are you a tortoise or a hare?) and I certainly do not pass judgment on those who know their baby best and choose to ?rip off the band aid? rather than drag it out, but for those of us who like ?baby steps? I do think there is an in-between and I urge many parents to try it.

Dating For Seniors ? The significance of THE SPARK

A lot of women fight to know what?s happening inside a man?s mind. I understand plenty of my female buddies do. Dating and associations are extremely frustrating sometimes when you do not know exactly what the guy thinks about the problem or feeling. So I?ll assist you to delve deep in to the deep male psyche so that you can understand men?s mind?s better and enhance your dating and associations using the opposite gender.

Would you like to understand the significance of ?The Spark??

Well as one example of my point I heard this anecdote lately. A buddy of the friend was dating a man purely because she felt sorry for him. She went with this particular guy for that better a part of six several weeks, however they never did anything sexual. Poor people guy got increasingly more annoyed. He thought she loved him but she did not. Eventually everything ended it tears. It always affects to reject someone. But when I would be declined I?d need it done rapidly and dramatically at first from the relationship, not six several weeks down the road when I?d already invested some enough time and emotional energy in it. Wouldn?t you are feeling exactly the same way?

Knowing what you would like from a relationship and just how to express ?No? when you are not offered it?s very, extremely important. Even when a guy is actually nice person and thinking about you does not mean you need to still pursue the relationship. If there?s no attraction with no spark it?ll all finish in tears. A whole lot worse than you could finish up kept in a stalemate relationship that you simply hate.

So I think you?ll understand males a little bit better now. And don?t forget you will find lots of quality men available so anything you do, don?t settle!

NEW YORKFall Fashion Week took over New York City as the top designers showed off their collections for the Fall/Winter 2012 season. Thousands of fashionistas descended upon Lincoln Center to get a glimpse of what will be hot for fall, but MTV News was able to give you a front-row seat to all the action. All week long, we learned about the hottest trends for the fall, and depending on what your fashion personality may be, we have found the perfect look for you.

Carefree And Laid-Back Fashionista
If you are more a laid-back girl who likes to glam it up every now and then, we suggest taking a look at Whitney Port's line, Whitney Eve. The former "The City" star, who told MTV News she was "pretty nervous" about showing her line for the first time as a solo designer, mixed traditional yet fun dresses with unique patterns, perfectly translating her kaleidoscope inspiration for the collection.

"This line is obviously really near and dear to my heart, I've been working on it for quite some time," Port told MTV News backstage at her show. "It's really reflective of my aesthetic, it's kind of that easy Los Angeles girl mixed with like the little funky streety vibe of New York. [There are] really fun prints, great embellishments, lots of texture.

Glitter And Glam Fashionista
If you love a little glitter and glam in your wardrobe (what girl doesn't?) then check out Alice + Olivia. Worn by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Selena Gomez and Jessica Alba, designer Stacey Bendet mixed bold colors with sequins and leather, making this line not only incredibly fashionable, but also extremely wearable.

"The thing for this season was vixen Lolita character," Bendet told MTV News about the inspiration behind her collection. "The colors are really rich. It's sort of an interesting palate of taking these bright but rich colors and mixing it with black, white and browns in an autumnal kind of way, so it feels sort of happy, but rich and fresh. It makes you smile."

Futuristic Fashionista
If you are looking to stand out in a crowd, take a peek at Michelle Smith's collection, Milly. Her 2012 fall collection showed off a futuristic flare, catching everyone's eye with her choice of vibrant colors of pink, greens and cobalt blue, which added a dramatic pop to her array of dresses, coats and skirts.

"I started with very technological fabrics, bounded double wools, textured tweeds a lot of lamination techniques," Smith said. "Very modern, futuristic fabrics, but they're cut in more traditionally classic couture silhouettes."

Study: Online Role-Playing Games Hurt Marriages | WebProNews

Online role playing games negatively affect real-life marital satisfaction, according to a new Brigham Young University study published today in the Journal of Leisure Research.

The study reports that 75 percent of spouses of sword-carrying, avatar-loving gamers wish they would put less effort into their guilds and more effort into their marriage. The researchers, led by graduate student Michelle Ahlstrom, and recreation management professor Neil Lundberg, studied 349 couples to learn how online role-playing games such as World of Warcraft, affect marital satisfaction for both gamers and their spouses. And in some cases, gaming even increased satisfaction.

?It?s common knowledge that many couples experience challenges around gaming,? Lundberg said. ?Particularly when husbands are heavy gamers, it clearly has a negative impact on their marriages.?

What the researchers found confirms popular opinion, with some interesting new details. The study revealed it?s not the time spent playing games that caused dissatisfaction, but rather the resulting arguments or disrupted bedtime routines. These issues can cause problems such as poorer marital adjustment, less time spent together in shared activities and less serious conversation, the study reports.

?It?s not the hours that make a difference,? Lundberg said. ?It?s really what it does to the relationship? whether or not it creates conflict and quarreling over the game.?

The study showed that gaming is dominated by men, but there is a contingent of women gamers who play with their spouses.

?We didn?t realize that there was a whole group of couples who game together,? Lundberg said. ?In those gaming couples where the marital satisfaction was low, the same issues existed. For example, if they argued about gaming and bedtime rituals were interrupted, even though they gamed together, they still had lower marital satisfaction scores.?

However, the study found that for couples in which both spouses play, 76 percent said that gaming has a positive effect on their marital relationship. Interestingly, for those who do game together, interacting with each others avatars?their online persona?leads to higher marital satisfaction. However, both must be satisfied with their mutual participation, especially the individual who plays less.

?Not all video games are bad,? said Ahlstrom, the graduate student. ?Some are fun leisure pursuits that when played together may strengthen your relationships with others. With any type of gaming, consider the content of the game. Consider what you are doing in the game, how much time it is taking, how it is affecting you, your schooling, work, sleep, body and especially how it is affecting your spouse and marital relationship.?

The researchers believe the problem could be more severe than the study shows because they found many dedicated gamers were not willing to participate in the study. The average age of the respondents to their nationwide survey was 33, and the average marriage length was 7 years. Of those couples in which only one spouse gamed, 84 percent of the players were the husbands. Of those couples where both gamed, 73 percent of those who gamed more were husbands.

?This study really does verify that gaming has an effect on marital satisfaction,? Lundberg said. ?It?s not just a random occurrence that a few couples are dealing with. Based on the large number of married gamers ? 36 percent of multi-player online role-playing gamers report being married? we can assume this is a widespread issue.?

Feeling hung-over from the yesterday?s love overdose? Find out why your battery?s drained with My Battery Drain Analyser. Then, get your silly back with Tappily Ever After and Cartoon Camera.

Sure, you know your smartphone battery doesn?t last all day, but do you know why? This nifty battery analyzer computes the percentage drain per-hour so you can start to figure out what your device is doing when it?s sucking juice faster than a non-hybrid SUV.

Launch the app and let it run as you normally use your phone. Then, page through the summary results that show the time/date, battery life percentage left, and color chart (red = bad, green = good) of battery remaining. The app even tracks charging events and how they impact the battery.

I used to think my life was like a movie, but now it reminds me of a comic book. View what your life would look like if it were hand-drawn by downloading this loony app.

The app uses your device camera to display real-time effects of cartoon, sepia, white strokes, dark strokes, and colored edges. Auto-focus with a single tap and capture the image with an on-screen button press. It also supports digital zoom and your device?s flash. Take a look at the images in the AndroidApps description to see how it will change your perspective on the world.

Love for Life? 12 Animals That Are (Mostly) Monogamous [Slide Show]

Is monogamy a myth even in the animal kingdom? Not necessarily. A look at animals that are said to pair off for life

gibbon monogomy pairOne and only?: Genetic research has dispelled many of the monogamy myths in the animal kingdom. But some bonds seem to hold up at least as well as human ones seem to. Image: Wikimedia Commons/Matthias Kabel

Let's face it, most animals get around. Only about 5 percent of mammals are considered to be monogamous. What a biologist means by monogamy is not necessarily what a marriage counselor might assume. In the animal kingdom, what we think of as commitment-type monogamy should really be separated out into at least three types of bonds, explained Diane Witt, who leads the Neural Systems Cluster at the National Science Foundation, in a live chat last week. There is sexual fidelity, social attachment and parental behavior. Research in a number of animal species suggests that differences in neurochemicals and receptors might influence various degrees of these sorts of pairing.

For instance, birds are quite socially monogamous, with some 92 percent of species sticking with one mate for at least a mating season. But that does not mean that some of them are not getting a little extracurricular action. With the advent of genetic testing, scientists have been able to get the inside scoop on flings by testing parents and offspring. So even birds with a reputation of respectability were often caught straying from the nest.

Not all animals, however, have ended up with a scarlet letter from science. See which animals stay true to their true loves and how humans stack up against animal kingdom odds.

Under the terms of the contract, both companies will take a 50 percent stake in the joint venture.?SMILE?FC System Corporation will be led by Mr. Osamu Honda, Executive Vice President and representative director for Suzuki Motor Corporation, who will become President of the JV.?SMILE?FC System Corporation will be headquartered in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka, with operations initially based in Yokohama.
