Renee DuShane: Professor Gaga? Lady Gaga Teaches Youth at the Launch of the Born This Way Foundation

When I think Harvard I think of two things: education and Legally Blonde. I definitely do not think of Lady Gaga. So, when I was asked to attend her "Born This Way Foundation" launch last Wednesday at Harvard University in Boston, I was immediately curious. As any teenager would, I consulted Google to learn more about it.

The first thing that struck me is that "Born This Way" seems like such a unique kind of foundation -- something I'd never really heard of anyone else doing before, for reasons I'll explain below. What made Lady Gaga want to launch a foundation? was probably the biggest question I had. I kept hoping this idea was as amazing as it seemed in writing: "to build a braver, kinder world that celebrates individuality and empowers young people."

I should have known it would be. I mean, when does Lady Gaga do anything that isn't over the top spectacular? Fan or not, she does a lot of good for a lot of teens. Even personally, I have found her message resonates a lot with what I believe in. Something about her had always caught my attention -- especially how bold and honest she is. I was so intimidated to think she would be sitting not five feet from me. What do you do? What do you say? WHAT DO YOU WEAR?

There I was, sitting on the rickety subway hurdling towards the Sanders Theater on Harvard campus. It was snowing outside, freezing cold, and my friend had decided to wear the wrong shoes for such an adventure. After getting wrong directions from some not so helpful Boston natives we finally made it and took our seats. We were front row, and the whole room was buzzing with energy and inspiration.

I looked around and heard all the teenagers sitting around me talk about how they had managed to get an invitation. Suddenly I felt undeserving to be sitting among them, to be seeing Lady Gaga when there are people suffering much worse than me who could also benefit from this experience. The positivity was flowing, and all eyes were on the two chairs in the center of the stage where Oprah Winfrey and Lady Gaga would sit.

When Oprah finally came out, all I could think was: It's Oprah! I kept repeating that over and over again, putting myself completely in the moment. I didn't want to forget a word of what she said, because when Oprah speaks, you listen! I was surprised at how real she was and how earnest she seemed to be about the foundation. She believed in the message and that we could make it come alive.

"We all want to know that what we do, what we say, and who we are matters," she said as she explained what the "Born This Way Foundation" saw in youth. Oprah stressed that she knew we all had the drive to make a change in the world, and Lady Gaga was giving us the vehicle. I came away from her speech with the feeling that I was about to be given the key to something very special. Also, I had just seen Oprah -- the highlight of my life!

Speaking from the perspective of the bullied, Oprah uttered one simple statement that got everyone clapping before she even finished: "Everybody comes to this Earth with the defiant right to be himself and herself."

I'll never forget that quote, and I suspect neither will anyone in that room. We all have a right to who we are, a natural born right. We also have the natural born right to scream at the sight of Lady Gaga... right?

When she finally came out onstage, Lady Gaga said: "Can I just say something before we start? We got Oprah!"

This joke seemed to break down all the barriers between fans and celebrity in the room. Oprah then interviewed Gaga about the foundation. Gaga looked professional in a long black dress, lace gloves and a black hair piece -- simple for her taste but perfect for the launch. It made her seem normal, despite her fame.

Answering Oprah's questions as honestly as possible, she explained that the foundation isn't about having all the answers. In fact she confessed that she "[wasn't there] to give answers or tell you [she could] solve all these problems. [It] is not an anti-bullying organization, it's a youth empowerment organization."

Gaga emphasized that no law is going to fix bullying -- or other problems youth face -- and that the answer is in all of us. Lady Gaga has never spoken more true words since her song "Born This Way." By focusing on youth empowerment, the "Born This Way Foundation" wants to establish these three pillars:

  • Safety, by creating an environment where people feel safe to be and express themselves.

  • Skills, to help us feel empowered to do something, to stand up and advocate.

  • Opportunity, to provide us with skills and an environment to make a change.

What makes the "Born This Way Foundation" different also is its focus on helping not only the victims, but the bullies themselves.

"The victim and the bully are both going through mental turmoil. Don't just save the victim, save the bully," Gaga said.

Lady Gaga advised taking a very unique and bold stand, and so did a woman who also spoke on a panel at the event, psychologist Susan Swearer. Dr. Swearer mentioned that the complete destruction of a person's mental health that can be caused by bully -- an effect people often don't realize until too late.

Fielding questions from experts who sat on a fake "jury" -- or panel -- Lady Gaga acted as a true leader, leveling with the youth present in the theatre. Multiple times she stressed that she was simply giving us the tools, we had to use them, too. I really felt she gave everyone in the room that little push we needed to realize that we needed to intervene when we saw bullying, at any level, around us at school.

"Call upon yourself," Gaga stated, to roaring applause.

Gaga closed the show after taking some audience questions (I'm still kicking myself -- every question I had flew right out of my head!) and hearing from her mother and co-founder, Cynthia Germanotta.

Standing within arm's reach, I will put money down that I locked eyes with Lady Gaga. Once she left, I really began to realize the presence she had in the room. Gaga radiates a "make a change" attitude, without forcing it down your throat. She makes a mountainous issue in society seem simple and resolvable.

On a personal level, the event made me want to change. It made me want to do more for others because I realized how powerful a simple compliment can be. I was lucky enough to be asked to write about this event, and it makes me sad that you all couldn't be there. I commend Lady Gaga and Oprah for their ability to instill hope in the audience with simple words and a transition of the power to change, from them to us.

The "Born This Way Foundation" takes stories, takes donations, and gives you all the tools you could ask for. I truly believe it is a missing piece in the large puzzle. It won't solve everything, but it's a start. It's the catalyst I've been looking for.

Lady Gaga came to Harvard not to make a change, but to make us think. She wanted to let us know that, in the end, this has to start "from the ground up," and be an entire cultural change within society. When we left we were told to do only one thing, and that was tell one other person about the "Born This Way Foundation." I have taken that request and spread the word. I hope you take on the challenge as well. The key is in your hands, make a change and empower someone. It's that easy and that powerful.

Thank you again to Lady Gaga, Oprah, and Cynthia, the members of the panel, Harvard University, Elizabeth, and everyone at The Huffington Post. This is an experience that has truly change how I view change. I could not be more honored to have been there.

Citizens Insurance Overhaul Bill Clears Senate Committee ? CBS ...

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) ? Despite worries of a financial burden on Florida policyholders, the Senate Budget Committee on Saturday OK?d financial changes to Citizens Property Insurance Corp. and the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund. The move is an effort to have them secured before one or more major storms hit Florida.

By unanimous vote, the Senate Budget Committee on Saturday approved a measure (SB 1342) that reduces the immediate assessments to shore up Citizens Property Insurance Corp. and gives the state and insurers more time to raise the funds necessary to pay off claims. Backers say that and other changes may make it more attractive for other private insurers to come into Florida and reduce the number of Citizens? policies, which now stand near 1.5 million.

?This bill does not change Citizens liability to pay claims after a storm,? said Senate sponsor Steve Oelrich, R-Cross Creek. ?It only addresses how Citizens collects to pay those liabilities.?

The bill reduces Citizens regular assessment from 6 percent per account to 2 percent for coastal property owners and eliminates it altogether for Citizens? personal lines account and commercial policyholders.

To make up the loss, the bill imposes greater levies using emergency assessments, which are charged on most lines of property and casualty policies in the state, including Citizens? own policies. (Workers? compensation and medical malpractice policyholders are not assessed.)

The bill would also allow Citizens to levy assessments directly to policyholders. Under current law, insurance companies are required to write a check to Citizens within 30 days after initial assessments are sent out and then collect that back from policyholders after the fact.

The payout requirement keeps some companies away from Florida, said JD Alexander, R-Lake Wales.

?They would no longer be the middle man,? Alexander said.

The bill was amended to include another hurricane-related issue: The Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund. The state-backed fund is responsible for reimbursing insurance companies and their policyholders for up to $17 billion in losses following a major storm that leaves companies unable to pay claims.

The amendment would shrink the hurricane fund over a three year period from $17 billion to $15 billion, a move that would reduce the risk on Florida taxpayers. The move is expected to result in a small increase in premiums, maybe 2 percent, that Alexander said is justified by the improved stability of the fund.

The decrease could also mean additional business for the private reinsurance market.

Alexander said the change is needed because given the tight credit market, Citizens would already be unable to obtain up to $17 billion from the bond market, much less be able to reimburse policyholders if a second storm hit.

The amendment and the bill have the support of the Office of Insurance Regulation, Citizens board members, the governor?s office and the state?s leading business groups. It is also supported by the Florida Insurance Consumer Advocate.

?It would be irresponsible not to adjust Citizens insurance the best we can to attract other companies,? Oelrich said. ?It is also going to put some money away -literally ? for a rainy day.?

The House companion (HB 1127) does not contain the CAT fund language. That bill was approved by the House and is now in messages.

MySpace Co-Founder Chris DeWolfe Explains SGN?s New Name, Multi-Platform Plans

chris dewolfeMindJolt, the gaming company led by MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe, recently announced that it's changing its name to the Social Gaming Network. DeWolfe spoke to me earlier this week about the name change, and about his plans for the coming year. The new company name may sound familiar, because MindJolt actually acquired SGN last year. (SGN founder Shervin Pishevar is now a managing director at Menlo Ventures.) DeWolfe says the SGN name is a better reflection of what the company is doing.

Dominick Cruz knows UFC flyweight contenders inside and out

The four men in the UFC flyweight tournament have glittering records, but they'd be a bit more glittering had they been able to avoid bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz. Three of the four men in the field -- Joseph Benavidez, Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall -- have already fought, and lost to, Cruz.

Their records are glittering as? is. They're 40-6 with 27 finishes. Subtract the two losses by Benavidez to Cruz and the ones by Johnson and McCall and they'd be 40-2.

Cruz spoke to Cagewriter on Wednesday to give his thoughts on the tournament and the fighters, particularly the three men he's faced.

Benavidez will fight Yasuhiro Urushitani and Johnson will take on McCall Friday (Saturday in Australia) at Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia, on the UFC on FX 2 card.

Urushitani, 35, is a former Shooto champion who is 19-4-6. Cruz said he knows the least about him.

"The UFC has the best fighters in the world, so I would assume since he's not fighting in the UFC that he hasn't been facing top-level guys," Cruz said. "Against that level of competition, that will hurt."

Cruz defeated Benavidez twice. He beat him first via unanimous decision at WEC 42 on Aug. 9, 2009, in a bout declared Fight of the Night. They then rematched for the WEC title and Cruz pulled out a split decision at WEC 50 on Aug. 18, 2010.

Cruz said Benavidez is exceptionally well-rounded.

"What makes Joe a tough opponent is that he's one of the few people who pieces together long combinations, with power and with takedowns," Cruz told Cagewriter in a telephone interview. "He also defends the takedown well and he's one of the few people who's got great submissions, great wrestling and great standup. He's a well-rounded fighter. He's got the full package. He's just a tough guy to fight, and he's hungry."

Cruz beat Johnson in his last outing, retaining the bantamweight title by winning all five rounds in a high-quality match on Oct. 1 at UFC Live in Washington, D.C. Cruz said he expects Johnson-McCall to be Fight of the Night on Friday.

He raved about both men and, though he picked McCall, said he wouldn't be shocked if Johnson came out on top.

"They're both dynamic, well-rounded, very good fighters," the champ said. "Stylistically, how Demetrious comes out and fights Ian is going to be the key to that fight. The big reason why I beat these guys the way that I did is that I game-planned them. I can change my style according to the way a specific person fights. I had to change my style against all of those guys, Benavidez, Demetrious and Ian. I give the edge to Ian in terms of power, but I give the edge in speed and striking to Demetrious. I'll take Ian in that fight because I think he can take Demetrious down and control him on the ground."

Both opening-round fights are three-rounders, but the UFC has announced there will be a "sudden victory" round if either bout is tied after three in order to produce a winner.

Despite that, Cruz said he thought all four men would lay it all on the line during the three rounds in order to get the win and predicted they wouldn't be concerned about saving something for a potential fourth.

"I think they'll just go balls to the wall," Cruz said. "You never hold back. I know when I'm fighting, if it's a five-rounder, I train for seven. If it's a three-rounder, I'll train for five, and I think they'll be the same way so they can be ready to sprint to the finish."

Smart Fitness Tips That Work For Every person | Balanced Life Secrets

Once deciding that you want to go with the self help process, it is important that you have the right direction to head down. This article will help you get started on a successful and rejuvenating journey with some goals to set and tips to help you on the way. Remember that you stay focused throughout the process. Click here to know more about great quotes to live by now.

Compare your progress only against yourself and not against others around you. You are trying to become the best you can be and not the best in the world. Remember, you will never be the best at anything as there will always be someone just a bit better. Focus on your own progress!

Unless you have a large number of income sources or a large number of deductibles, try to do your own taxes. Many large tax institutions have an online program that teaches you and guides you through your tax preparation, and it doesn?t take long, just an hour or two. Get acquainted with online tax software and save yourself some money, and be more savvy about the tax system as a whole.

If you are aiming to develop yourself, a great tip is to try to avoid being selfish. People are selfish by nature. However, if we can care for others and help them by being selfless instead of selfish, we can get closer to developing ourselves in the best possible way.

When considering developing yourself personally be sure it is because you want to not only because someone else told you to. Part of personal development is being true to yourself and what you expect from yourself. If you are doing it for someone else you are doing it from a negative perspective and are less likely to succeed in achieving your goals.

To safely administer self help in regards to bipolar disorder, make sure that you are getting enough sleep at night. This is extremely important because your body and mind both need time to recover and repair themselves. If you are not sleeping enough, then your body will not be able to recover for the next day and this may complicate some of your emotional issues.

If you focus too much on what you want, then you create reasons for why you can not have what you want. This leads you to dwell on your weaknesses. Rather, focus on gratitude. Every day, you should focus on things that you are grateful for. This will give you a positive outlook on life.

Try not to be impulsive with your feelings and actions. It is very difficult to evaluate what is going on and what needs to be done if you make hasty and careless decisions. Granted some decisions can be made rather quickly, but this is to get you to think more about decisions that require more of your energy and time.

Although many paths of personal development focus on the mind and soul, we must not forget the physical element of improving our health. This can be as simple as getting out for a daily walk or as complicated as joining a fitness ?boot camp?. Either way, the improved physical state of our bodies will allow us to better apply our minds in developing desirable traits and qualities.

Practice forgiveness. No one is perfect, and it is easy sometimes instead of looking at our own faults to point out others and hold grudges. Many things can happen to us that are hard to forgive, but forgiveness was given to us free, and we should definitely freely give it to others.

Instead of harboring resentment and frustration, make a conscious effort to remember that the rest of the world need not be attuned to your personal schedule. This is especially true of household chores and small, non-urgent tasks in the office. If you have reason to emphasize time-sensitivity, follow your request with an explanation of what is to be gained or lost by completing the project by a given time.

Make sure you get enough sleep at night. The average adult usually needs at least eight hours of sleep. If you have a hard time falling and staying asleep try activities that will tire you like exercising. By changing your routine you can develop better sleeping habits.

Establishing a morning walking routine can provide a boost to your personal development plan. Early morning sunlight is good for your mind and walking is good for your body. You can use this time to quietly reflect on the upcoming day and commend yourself for getting it off to a fresh, healthy beginning.

Consider learning an instrument as part of your personal development. You probably had some type of music training when you were young, and it is never too late to learn again. Learning an instrument can expand your appreciation for various types of music. Music teachers for adults can customize lessons and use music that are more appropriate for adults. Therefore, do not worry that you will only be learning children?s songs. Being able to play an instrument is a wonderful feeling, you are really missing out if you don?t give it a try.

Achieving lasting change in those areas that we seek to improve can be difficult, and if you?re looking for guidance, you?ve come to the right place! The most difficult part is deciding to start. So, start now with the suggestions mentioned in this article with your quest for self improvement. We wish you success in your journey! Find out more about how to build self esteem right now.
